Module 4: The story of you
My Story
Hello everyone,
my name is Gurkirat Sethi. I am 19 years old. I belong to Ludhiana, Punjab. I
live in a nuclear family. I am pursuing B.tech in civil engineering from UPES
College in Dehradun. I completed my primary and secondary education from D.A.V
Public School. I have always focused on achieving my goals including learning
English language, participating in extra-curricular activities.
Civil is a
vast field and very effective for a country’s development. I decided to become
a Civil Engineer because I have always been fascinated by looking at the
bridges, building and construction work. I also started to develop my interest
in construction work, by admiring my father as he is a contractor and I used to
visit with me at different construction sites. I want to be like him and want
to help him in his work. I used to see him doing a lot of hardwork. As I look
at the challenges of the future, I still see the vision of the field of civil
engineering. A degree in Civil Engineering enables me to achieve my goals and
also gives me an opportunity to make a difference in the community.
After
completing my 4 years of bachelor degree my main priority is to get a well-paid
job or else I would prefer to go abroad for specialization in particular field
in civil engineering. Besides all these I can also fill out some tests like
IES, GATE, and PSU. A career as a civil engineer also offers several lucrative
job avenues in both public and private sector. I would like to do a job for
several years to gain experience, and after that I would like to establish my
own business. As without experience and hardwork in practical world I won’t be
able to deal with construction work and establish my own business.
Earlier
after completion of my 1st year, in my vacations my father appointed
me as trainee in one of his friend’s construction site. I used to spend about 3
to 4 hours daily for 1 month at the site. I learnt a lot things, how to deal
with the labor, engineers at the site, materials to be used, cost of the
materials, what kind of machines are used, there functioning and much more.
Literally, it requires so much of hardwork to work at the site, I also learnt
how to manage time, be productive and be cost efficient. At the site we also
dealt with many problems and figured out the solutions which boosted my problem
solving capabilities. Overall, it was a great experience to get knowledge for
your life goal.
Being an
engineer is not an easy task. It requires a lot of hardship. A lot of
dedication is required. The good thing is that I have interest in my branch and
have a great family support. For becoming a successful civil engineer I have to
gain more and more theoretical and practical knowledge. Generally, I used to do
SWOT analysis, it helps letting me know my strength, weaknesses, areas I have
to work on. I have to work on my communication skills, as I lag a little in
conversing. I have to be regular with my studies so I could score good pointer
at the end of my B.tech course and can get a good internship. Also I am
preparing for many entrance test simultaneously.
“EVEN IF YOU’RE ON THE RIGHT TRACK,
YOU’LL GET RUN OVER IF YOU JUST SIT
THERE.”
It says you
have to actually do something with your life if you want to get somewhere. But
if you are just going to sit there, you aren’t going to get anywhere and
someone else will run over you who is trying to get the place you were going
to. My family plays a major role in motivating me and setting me on the right
track for my life. They made me very clear to what to do with my life and how
to achieve it. Whenever I get careless or derail from my track they help to
achieve it back.
I hope I
will complete my civil engineering course successfully with good results and
get placed in a good company for better experience, and later on establish my
own business.
THANKYOU.
